![]() June is PTSD Awareness MonthTherapists are all too familiar with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a condition that can develop in victims or even witnesses of a traumatic event. It is believed that as many as eight percent of Americans are suffering from PTSD at any given time. June is PTSD Awareness Month and June 27 is PTSD Awareness Day. The awareness dates are intended to bring attention to this serious disorder, and many PTSD related groups use the entire month of June to educate people and help connect those in need with proper treatment. Though we set aside this month annually, professionals and the general public should always be willing to learn about this disorder, connect with anyone who might be suffering, and share the very effective methods and resources available for treating this illness. Through better public understanding and empathy for people with PTSD, someday we might be able to end the unnecessary stigma of mental illness and have more people be willing to seek treatment. ScienceDaily.com features a video on new therapies being used to help US soldiers reset their brains and cope with their emotions. The disorders featured in the video include severe headache and loss of emotional feelings and expressions. Find out how some soldiers are recovering in Resetting PTSD Brains. PTSD affects nearly 30 percent of troops who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Resources can be found on Veterans Administration website,http://www.ptsd.va.gov/. |
